Google has announced a new feature that will give website owners, operators, and publishers control over the display and use of their content in Search Console. The company said that with the increasing use of artificial intelligence (AI), the feature has been introduced to give website owners clear control over the display and use of their content. With this feature, website owners and publishers will be able to decide whether or not to allow their content to be used in Google’s AI-based search.

According to the new feature, website owners will have the option to show or not their content in AI search features such as AI Overviews and AI Mode through Google Search Console. If a website decides to opt out of this, their content will not appear in Google’s AI search results.

Google has stated that the content of websites will not be used to generate AI answers and will not receive any traffic (visitors) or impressions from those AI features. Google has stated that even if content is removed from AI search, it will not affect the visibility of the website in traditional Google search and the traffic and rankings that it receives.

The new feature comes after the UK Competition and Markets Authority ordered publishers to provide more transparency and control over how their content is used in AI. Google recently started showing AI-generated summaries at the top of search results, prompting widespread criticism that users were not clicking through to the main website, which in turn was reducing visitors and advertising revenue for media houses.

Under the new rules, publishers will also be able to opt out of having their content used in training AI models. Google said it has already started testing a feature with some website operators that will allow them to control AI usage and general search separately. The company said it will expand the feature more widely if the test is successful.
