OpenAI Report : Million people talk about suicide and mental health on ChatGPT every week

OpenAI has made a serious and startling revelation in its new report. According to the company, more than one million people are using ChatGPT every week to discuss suicide and other mental health issues.

According to OpenAI, 0.15 percent of ChatGPT’s approximately 800 million weekly users express suicidal thoughts or desires during conversations. A similar proportion of users have shown emotional attachment to the chatbot, and some have also shown signs of mental symptoms such as psychosis or mania, the company said.

OpenAI says it is working with more than 170 mental health experts to improve ChatGPT for sensitive situations. According to the company, its latest model, GPT-5, is now able to provide accurate and sensitive responses in 91 percent of cases, compared to 77 percent previously.

The report comes as discussions about AI and mental health are heating up around the world. Sometimes chatbots can deepen users’ confused thoughts, which can worsen a person’s mental state, researchers have warned.

OpenAI is also facing a lawsuit over this issue. According to the claim, a 16-year-old user shared his suicidal thoughts with ChatGPT before committing suicide. The attorneys general of California and Delaware then ordered the company to tighten security measures for underage users.

OpenAI is currently developing an age-detection system that will be able to identify whether a user is underage. The company also said it has added new benchmarks to monitor emotional dependency and non-suicidal behavior.
